This blog is written in May 2010 hence it present situation prevailing at that time. But today what we see is sharp contrast to what existed barely few months back. Lets have a look at it.
May 2010: Preparations for commonwealth is in full swing. Officials are amazingly doing their best to organize this game in a good manner. I think it is judicious to say New Delhi is witnessing a significant transformation on the eve of Commonwealth Games. In many standards this opportunity is perceived as a milestone to showcase our capabilities in organizing such big events successfully in the future. I think this will strengthen our claim (in front of Olympic Federation) to get the hosting of 2020 Olympic games. For the last three years officials are working hard to arrange everything right on the time. Whole city is transformed to leave visitors with avow experience. New world class stadiums, flyovers, metro train facilities have been upgraded in the city. In a nutshell, deep transformation is happening in the city.
Widening Gap: Rapid transformation of Delhi is so contrasting that it has widen the gap between the amenities available in other metro cities. Look at the kind of investment done by central and state govt. in transforming this city. As per officials spokesperson govt. have spend $5 billion in the whole development process (China has spent around $40 Billion during hosting of Olympic games.Transformation is evidently visible in the city. The amazing thing is the speed with which everything is happening. Facts indicate that Delhiites have never witnessed such a pace of development ever before in their lifetime. Flyovers, roads and over bridges are constructed in dazzling short span of time. (normally it takes years to do so because of bureaucracy exists in our system). This is some thing which truly deserves appreciation. Some time I thought what would happen, if govt would work in equally efficient manner on other cities. I guess we would surely leave behind many developed worlds in terms of infrastructure. It's very amazing to ever happen in our country. Hope we witness same pace of development in our life time.
August 2010: Now let the flop side of all these glitz. According to some environmentalist- the way govt is erecting infrastructure in the bank of Jamuna river, it will come at the huge cost of environmental damage. Many environmentalist warned the govt. about it's bad repercussion. Govt. has till now turned down their claims saying environmentalist are extolling the environmental damage claims. We mango people never concludes what is the realty, but one thing we can surely say that nothing comes in this world without incurring costs.
Other critics are suspicious about the successful execution of the event. the venues are not completed yet. CW organizing committee is continually delaying the date of completion of the venues. Some fears that venues would not be completed on time. Upon this Indian Olympic Organizing committee says that the events is going to be a grand success looking to the progress rate of the preparation. He rubbished the claims of critics saying such person unnecessarily vying to spoil the event. Hope he is right and event will occur successfully.
Now, our country is heading to host Commonwealth games in October, its good to focus on making this event a grand success. History witness of glamour, shadowing the dark face beneath. Lets hope the best.

I am sure, we Indians are better managing crisis and anyhow because of CWG our own Delhi will have good infrastructure, which otherwise would have taken years to built.
ReplyDeleteDear Vidit,
ReplyDeleteI agree to your point. It would have taken long time otherwise to develop such infrastructure projects in New Delhi. Thanks for appreciating my efforts.
